Shane Shapera

Biography

Shane Shapera joined the Faculty of Medicine in the Division of Respirology at the University of Toronto in January 2011 with a mandate to create an Interstitial Lung Diseases Program. He has subsequently pioneered the development of the largest ILD program in Canada which has contributed to research leading to approval of new therapies in ILD and whose Fellowship Training Program has substantially increased the number of Respirologists with ILD expertise in Canada.

He has made meaningful contributions at all levels of medical education including annual lectures and a longitudinal clinical skills course for pre-clerkship students, seminars on ILD for Internal Medicine Residents and is the coordinator of the academic half day for the Respirology sub-specialty training program. He has travelled across the country providing continuing medical education (CME) in ILD diagnosis and management.

He has over 40 peer reviewed publications including co-authorship on all of the Canadian Thoracic Society’s Position Statements on the diagnosis, management and monitoring of patients with ILD.

His teaching has been recognized with 13 teaching awards since 2010 including 3 Wightman-Berris individual teaching awards, undergraduate and post-graduate Respirology Faculty Teaching Awards and the University Health Network and Sinai Health System Teacher of the Year award.
