Dr. Shehata is the Head of Transfusion Medicine at Mt. Sinai Hospital. She led a seminal randomized clinical trial comparing a restrictive versus more liberal policy of red blood cell transfusion in cardiac surgery. The trial found that the restrictive policy was non-inferior to the liberal approach, which had major implications for clinical practice. The study resulted in co-principal author publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, for which she received the Keating Award for Best Paper of the Year in the Division of Hematology at U of T. In addition, Dr. Shehata worked with colleagues in OBGYN to establish a multidisciplinary specialized clinic in Maternal Hematology and a unique two-year fellowship program in Maternal Hematology for hematologists and obstetricians. Both fellowship programs have attracted national and international trainees.
