Lorraine Lipscombe

Biography

Dr. Lipscombe was instrumental in demonstrating the link between diabetes and cancer. Her research has shown that women with diabetes have lower rates of preventive screening for breast, cervical and colorectal cancers, and more advanced breast cancer at diagnosis, that diabetes is associated with higher all-cause but similar cancer-specific mortality for breast and colorectal cancer, that there is a significant rise in diabetic complications after a cancer diagnosis, and that there are important disparities in diabetes quality of care for cancer survivors. She is a founding member of the International Diabetes and Cancer Research Consortium.
With respect to diabetes prevention in women with gestational diabetes, Dr. Lipscombe established a prospective cohort of over 1300 women with gestational diabetes from 2009 to 2013. This is one of the largest population-based studies to date on this topic.

In 2021, she was appointed the inaugural Director, Novo Nordisk Network for Healthy Populations at the University of Toronto.
