Gideon Hirschfield

Biography

Gideon Hirschfield is a Staff Hepatologist at Toronto Centre for Liver Disease, UHN and Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Toronto. He trained in the UK in Clinical Medicine (Oxford, Cambridge) and then Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Hepatology/Liver transplantation (Cambridge, London). His PhD was awarded by UCL, and he also had post-doctoral/fellowship training in Toronto.

Prior to his current appointment he held faculty/clinical staff positions in Toronto (2009-2011) and Birmingham (2012-2018). His clinical interests are in rare liver disease, in particular the pre- and post-transplant management of patients living with primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis and autoimmune hepatitis.  He actively pursues translational research opportunities that facilitate development of new diagnostics and treatments for patients with liver disease.
