Baiju Shah

Biography

Dr. Shah is an endocrinologist and clinical epidemiologist/health services researcher. His research program on diabetes in vulnerable populations has focused on immigrant, visible minority and indigenous populations and has generated international interest. This work has been important in demonstrating variability in risk for incident diabetes and access to recommended diabetes treatment strategies, including diabetes eye care, by race/ethnicity, immigration status and health insurance status coverage. This work has resulted in a published report, 12 peer-reviewed papers in 2019 and 2020, and invitations to present at the 2020 International Diabetes Federation Congress. He is currently conducting a pilot randomized, controlled trial, funded by CIHR, to determine if providing free access to diabetes, hypertension and cholesterol medications to uninsured people with diabetes improves diabetes outcomes. This work is contributing important evidence to the ongoing debate in Canada on universal pharmacare. Dr. Shah is Head of the Division of Endocrinology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
