Biography

Dr. Patel is a clinician investigator in the field of hepatology (liver disease). He has made major contributions to the management of chronic liver disease through the development of novel biomarkers to replace liver biopsy in diagnosing moderately advanced scarring in viral hepatitis. These include a non-invasive serum marker panel (FibroSpect II), a novel collagen neoepitope (Pro-CIII), and a non-invasive fibroscan for liver stiffness (FibroScan). This work has been extremely important in advancing early diagnosis and treatment of viral liver disease while avoiding liver biopsy. His research has been referenced in multiple guideline statements, including the 2015 European Association for Study of the Liver Clinical Practice Guidelines, and he has given numerous invited presentations on his research.

He is the UHN Clinical Hepatology Fellowship director and a member of the Hepatology Fellowship Program committee.
